Film faced plywood – a suitable material for furniture production and construction works thanks to its outstanding advantages in quality and high reusability, film faced plywood formwork helps construction contractors minimize construction costs. Let’s learn more about film faced plywood, its characteristics and common applications today with Fiber Wood

Film faced plywood or often known as film faced formwork, marine plywood, construction plywood or phenolic plywood. It is a type of industrial wood panel made from many thin veneers. They are produced by heat pressing method with high pressure and suitable temperature along with specialized glue to bond the thin wood panels together

The combination of 3 components: plywood core, phenolic surface and phenolic waterproof glue with hot pressing method (125 degrees C to 140 degrees C) has helped formwork panels have very high durability, good heat resistance and limited physical impact from the outside environment

Structure of film faced plywood

The structure of film-faced formwork panels is similar to that of regular plywood, made from 3 main components: core board, surface and specialized adhesive layer

Board core

The core wood of the film plywood is the factor that determines its bearing capacity as well as its durability. Normally, the core layers are sliced directly from natural wood trunks of planted forests (eucalyptus, acacia, birch, rubber…), about 1.7mm thick. These layers will be stacked on top of each other in a certain order and bonded together using glue under the influence of appropriate heat pressure

Surface

The surface of the board is covered with a thin film dipped in WBP Phenolic waterproof glue, which is shiny and smooth. That is why film faced plywood is also known as phenolic plywood. With the effect of preventing water penetration while increasing hardness, elasticity and limiting scratches due to external impacts

Currently on the market, there are 2 types of specialized colors: black and brown. Depending on the purpose of use, users will choose the color that suits their needs

Glue layer

The glue layer not only helps the wooden panels bond together, but it is also the most important component – determining the water resistance of a formwork panel

The specialized glue commonly used in this panels is Melamine Urea Formaldehyde (MUF) or Phenol Formaldehyde (PF), with the advantages of high adhesion and good water resistance

Film faced plywood production process

To ensure product quality to consumers, the film faced plywood production process is always strictly managed through each stage. In addition, the input wood source for making the board must be of the required age to bring the finished product to standard. A finished product must be fully tested for durability, moisture resistance, load-bearing capacity; Formaldehyde concentration…

The production process includes:

  • Step 1: Harvesting round timber
  • Step 2: Peel and slice the wood
  • Step 3: Sorting and drying
  • Step 4: Sew and glue
  • Step 5: Arrange the boards
  • Step 6: Cold pressing and hot pressing of wood core
  • Step 7: Repair surface putty
  • Step 8: Sand and pre-cut the core
  • Step 9: Staining the core and gluing the surface
  • Step 10: Cold pressing and hot pressing surface
  • Step 11: Sand and cut to size
  • Step 12: Finish

Some uses of film faced plywood

Currently, film plywood is a type of industrial plywood that is very popular and the first choice in many fields thanks to its high applicability. Specific applications of formwork plywood include:

Film faced formwork in construction field

Thanks to its outstanding features such as high durability, good load-bearing capacity… film-faced plywood is often widely used in the construction industry as a type of construction plywood which can replace traditional concrete molds, floor panels, floor pouring, beam pouring. In addition, with the ability to withstand water and can be reused up to 8-12 times, it also helps contractors optimize construction costs in general and material costs in particular

With light weight, it is easy to transport during construction and installation. This is the suitable solution for civil housing projects, high-rise buildings, infrastructure, bridge and culvert projects…

Film faced formwork is used in furniture manufacturing

Possessing many advantages in technical characteristics, along with a smooth and shiny surface, film plywood is quite commonly used in furniture production such as making cabinets, shelves, tables, chairs, partitions…

It overcomes the problems of warping and termites. In addition, they can also create many designs with dark colors. Therefore, it will help to enhance the style of the living space for sure and strong

Film faced formwork in the marine field

Film faced plywood is made from high-quality hardwoods and good waterproof glue. Therefore, the product features are light, durable, sturdy and has few defects

In addition, it can also be boiled for 20 to 60 hours without delamination. These characteristics are the reason why film faced plywood is a marine plywood which is very suitable for applications in the marine industry, shipbuilding industry, boats…

How to preserve film faced plywood

To ensure the longevity of the sheet, proper storage is very important and customers need to pay attention to:

  • Store in a cool environment, avoid placing in hot, dry or too humid places
  • The board should be placed to avoid putting too much pressure or force on the edges
  • Fix the boards into each bale with straps and cover with paper to avoid collision during transportation

  • During transportation, avoid bumping yourself, affecting the quality of the board
  • Use a specialized saw with a sharp blade to avoid fraying or fraying of the cut
  • After cutting, apply a layer of waterproof glue to prevent moisture and water from seeping into the cut
  • Clean the board carefully and thoroughly after each use. Apply a layer of concrete anti-stick coating (Rheofinish – BASF) to both surfaces before storing
