WHAT IS PLYWOOD ?

Plywood, also known as veneer or laminated wood, is made from thin sheets of wood peeled from logs. These layers are bonded with glue under heat and pressure, creating durable, versatile panels used widely in construction and furniture.

PLYWOOD STRUCTURE

Normally, each industrial wood panel is a complete combination of 3 important components: core layer, surface layer and glue. Thanks to that, ply sheet has a special structure and becomes a durable material that can replace natural wood in the future

Core layer

Plywood core is made up of many layers of veneer stacked in a certain order. The veneer layers are usually sliced from round, strong trees (eucalyptus, birch, pine, acacia…) with a standard thickness ranging from 1 – 1.7mm

Typically, the veneer layers are arranged perpendicular to each other in the direction of the wood grain to create high durability and overcome the warping phenomenon commonly found in solid wood or natural wood. This structure is called LVB or LVD, of which LVD ply is the most popular type on the market. However, in practice, manufacturers can arrange the veneer layers parallel along the wood grain to create superior bending ability, also known as LVL plywood

LVL STRUCTURE

LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) plywood is a product with veneer layers (thin wood sheets peeled from logs) stacked and pressed in the same direction. Thanks to this structure, LVL plywood is specifically used for manufacturing curved products or furniture with horizontal load-bearing structures.

Applications of LVL Plywood include: curved furniture, beams, bed slats, and structural components of furniture.,

LVD, LVB STRUCTURE

LVB and LVD plywood are structured with veneer layers stacked and pressed in alternating directions between layers. However, while LVD has a structure of one horizontal layer followed by one vertical layer, LVB only has the two outermost layers in opposite directions or arranged randomly.

Applications of LVB and LVD Plywood include furniture production, construction materials (formwork), maritime uses, handicrafts, and more.

The thickness of the core depends on the number of veneer layers. For each thickness, plywood will have the following typical characteristics:

Thin core: It has toughness and flexibility, suitable for products that need to be bent or processed with many details: decorations, toys…

Thick core: The hardness of wood panel is proportional to the number of veneer layers that make it up. Therefore, the thicker the core is, the more durable and strong it will be, suitable for applications in interior and construction products

Surface layer

The surface is carefully selected to ensure the aesthetics and quality of the plywood sheet. Depending on the purpose of use, industrial wood sheets will be covered with different materials.

Nowadays, the industrial wood market is becoming more and more vibrant with the diversification of types. Below are some common plywood coating materials that you can refer to for differentiation:

Veneer

The veneer is sliced from highly aesthetic tree trunks, with natural and unique wood grain patterns. The surface is usually yellow or warm brown

Melamine, laminate

These are specialized decorative paper coverings for industrial wood with diverse patterns: imitation wood grain, cement…

Film paper

Film is a type of paper coated with specialized phenolic glue, possessing a characteristic black or dark brown color

Paint: PU, Acrylic...

These are specialized paints, coated directly onto the plywood surface. They produce a smooth, glossy wood surface with solid colors or metallic glitter…

UV

UV is a liquid layer that can harden when exposed to ultraviolet rays during the plywood production process, creating a colorless glossy coating on the surface

Glue

Glue is an important ingredient to bond the veneer layers together. A quality glue will produce a plywood product that is more durable, water-resistant and prevents separation under the influence of external factors

The type of glue used in wood sheet is usually phenolic glue or urea-formaldehyde. In which, each type of glue has the following characteristics:

– Phenolic glue has good water resistance, often used in exterior, marine, construction

– Urea-formaldehyde glue has limited moisture resistance, but is popular for interior products due to its cost advantage

Popular Plywood Types

Furniture and construction are two fields that best reflect the usefulness of plywood. This material has become the key to the durability and perfection of many furniture products and construction works

The following 3 types of industrial wood have many outstanding advantages and are trusted in Vietnam and many other countries around the world:

Veneer plywood

Veneer plywood has a 3-layer structure like other common industrial wood types. The special feature is that the surface coating is made from 0.3 – 0.6mm thick veneer with aesthetic and realistic wood grain patterns

Based on production technology, it is divided into two main types as follows: natural veneer and artificial veneer

Natural veneer: The veneer is sliced directly from valuable wood trunks with beautiful grain patterns such as oak, walnut, birch, poplar, okoume…

Technical veneer: The surface coating is made from natural fibers, but the color and wood grain pattern are processed as desired thanks to advanced production technology

Outstanding advantages of veneer-coated plywood

Each finished veneer plywood product is a combination of both aesthetic and quality factors:

Aesthetics: Completely different from specialized decorative papers, veneer has characteristic wood patterns, bringing the beauty of originality and rusticity. Interiors made from veneer plywood bring a sense of closeness, warmth but no less luxurious and modern

Quality: Veneer plywood has high durability and good load-bearing capacity. Moreover, this is a material that is easy to construct due to its good screw holding ability

Film faced plywood

Film faced plywood is a type of industrial wood that is easily recognized by its characteristic black or dark brown surface. This color comes from the black film paper – a type of paper coated with phenolic glue with good water and scratch resistance

In addition, high-quality film-faced wood cores are often produced with phenolic glue for the best performance. Because phenolic glue is a type of glue whose main ingredient is phenol – formaldehyde, which has good water resistance and adhesion properties, helping the veneer wood layers bond together firmly over time, even when exposed to harsh environmental factors

Outstanding advantages of film faced plywood

Film faced plywood is used in the construction industry as a formwork. They are chosen by many contractors because of their outstanding advantages

✅ Good water resistance: Thanks to its solid structure and bonded by phenolic glue, it is a super water-resistant material. Even high-quality film-faced plywood does not delaminate even after being boiled for 72 hours

✅ Reusability: It is highly durable so contractors can use it in many projects. Moreover, the film layer makes the surface of the plywood become smooth, making it easy to separate the concrete mold after pouring without much treatment

Sofa plywood - core plywood

Sofa plywood, also known as core plywood, has a more special structure than regular ply sheets in that it does not include a surface coating. Therefore, the sofa board production process will be shortened and consume less raw materials

The most important factor in core plywood is its durability and load-bearing capacity. Therefore, the core is often made from veneer of hardwoods: acacia, eucalyptus, ash…

Outstanding advantages of sofa plywood

Sofa plywood is the optimal choice for producing sofa frames, upholstered chairs or pallets… Nowadays, when quality and cost requirements are both top priorities in furniture production, core plywood is increasingly widely used

✅ Cost optimization: The sofa board production process is quick and does not require surface coating materials, so it is more affordable than solid wood or other types of industrial wood

✅ Good load-bearing capacity, easy to process: The plywood core still has a special layered structure, combined with specialized glues, so it has high stability. In addition, the rough surface helps the sofa plywood have higher screw grip, suitable for the process of making interior frames

Advantages of Plywood

Plywood is a type of industrial wood panel that inherits many advantages of natural wood while overcoming several drawbacks of industrial wood. This material is increasingly popular due to the following characteristics:

High durability, long-term use and can be reused for certain types of boards

Good bearing capacity thanks to the characteristic layering structure, limiting shrinkage and warping

Moisture resistance, better waterproofing than other types of industrial wood

Good screw adhesion thanks to the structure of stacked veneer panels

Most popular plywood sizes

User needs are increasingly diverse, industrial wood is not only more diverse in surface types but also produced in many different sizes

However, each type of material has its most common standard levels. Below is a table of common plywood sizes, suitable for the most common uses of customers:
